Promoting Community Spirit
Community spirit is promoted by initiatives which give residents a voice; inspire and motivate them to work together for a common aim such as resolving estate issues or improving their local environment; and which create a friendly and safe neighbourhood for all. Leitrim Residents’ Associations Network can assist in many ways as already outlined.
-
The setting up of residents’ associations with all the benefits they can bring to the estate is a key step. The council grant can be used to buy spring bulbs, shrubs and trees for planting in public areas; for major purchases such as a community shed and garden power tools for use by residents. Also it may assist in the holding of community events such as ‘Fun days’ for children, community picnics, etc.
-
Provision of information, advice and practical help in resolving issues.
-
Lobbying for estate enhancement and better amenities, eg. CE schemes for grounds maintenance or children’s play areas. Estates may be eligible for community houses on site for hosting meetings and events.
-
Keeping residents informed about other community initiatives such as An Taisce’s annual spring clean-up and the Tidy Towns competitions, which can engender major community spirit. Also grants for environmental projects, such as the annual Local Agenda 21 grants awarded through local councils.
